How does radon enter a home?

HOME  Inspections, L.L.C.

Believe it or not, Radon is a radioactive gas. It actually comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above, then into your home through cracks and other openings in the foundation. Your home then traps radon inside, where radon levels can build up. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.

Radon from the soil is the main cause of elevated radon levels but sometimes radon in homes may enter through well water. And in a small number of cases, home building materials can even give off radon. However, building materials rarely cause radon problems by themselves. Some of the more common ways Radon can enter your home include: cracks in solid floors, construction joints, cracks in walls, gaps in suspended floors, gaps around service pipes, cavities inside walls, and the water supply.

Radon is estimated to cause thousands of cancer deaths each year in the U.S. according to the EPA. 1 out of 15 homes test positive for dangerous levels. 24-48 hour EPA protocol test is highly recommended if you have a basement!

* We offer Radon Testing at the time of your home inspection for and your results will be immediately E-mailed to you in your radon report in 48 hours when we pick up our machine.

* Don't be fooled by an inspector that will offer to test with a "wand" in minutes. Radon fluctuates HOUR BY HOUR and the numbers change dramatically as each hour passes. Our machine will detect those changes and we leave it in the home for a minimum of 48 hours to get a comprehensive AVERAGE at the end of the 48 hours. Your E-mailed pdf. report will have hour-by-hour test results and the overall average.

* If your radon does test high, and you're buying a home- the sellers almost always pay to have this problem remediated (which can cost around $800-$1,000.00) so its very important to test BEFORE YOU MOVE INTO THE HOME so that you are safe (#1) and you will not have to pay to have it removed.
